“Alter Elbtunnel is also known as the Old Elbe Tunnel, which has existed since 1911. This landmark crosses under the Norderelbe River with two tunnel tubes spanning 426.5 meters, connecting the southern edge of the harbour. The tunnel serves as a public transport route for pedestrians and cyclists and, to a limited extent, for motor vehicles. The landmark was considered a technical sensation when it opened. Alter Elbtunnel was designated a listed building by the Federal Chamber of Engineers and the Hamburg Chamber of Engineers in 2003. It was awarded the title of Historical Landmark of Civil Engineering in Germany on September 7, 2011. The tunnels are symmetrical and consist of five sections. Each tunnel features a 20-meter-long horizontal section in front of its respective elevator. Then follows a section described on the wall as "falls 1:100 to 150 meters" when driving towards the middle of the tunnel and "rises 1:100 to 150 meters" when travelling in the opposite direction.”
